Guitarist Sean Shibe takes centre stage in this folk-inspired programme, which traces the roots of the Scottish-Canadian diaspora in music from the Renaissance to the present day. From the exquisite delicacy of the Scottish lute manuscripts and Dowland’s heart-rending Lachrimae, we course through Purcell and Geminiani to meet Sir James MacMillan’s timeless From Galloway and Linda Caitlin Smith’s Sinfonia – united by their irresistible blend of modernism and folksong. To close, modern guitar meets gut strings in a brand-new guitar concerto from the award-winning Canadian composer, Cassandra Miller.

This event is commissioned by John Ellerman Foundation, and co-commissioned by the Barbican and Saffron Hall.

This concert will be recorded for future broadcast. Concert running time 75mins with no interval.
